Two features of that structure change how you should plan.

What Should You Be Doing Month by Month?
Working back from a fall 2027 start:
- Spring 2026 and earlier. Build the course plan on ASSIST for your target campus and major. Prerequisites for competitive majors take multiple terms, so this is the only stage where the plan can still be changed cheaply.
- Summer 2026. Close remaining gaps in major preparation. Confirm your unit count and check whether summer coursework is needed to be application-ready by fall.

- October 2026. Draft the personal insight questions and finalize your campus and major list. Verify that the courses you are relying on appear correctly on your record.
- November 2026. Complete and submit inside the filing period. Do not aim for the final day; submit with margin and keep the confirmation.
- December 2026. Check the acknowledgement from each campus and set up the campus applicant portals. Requests for documents start arriving here.
- January 2027. The Transfer Academic Update. Report fall grades and confirm in-progress and planned coursework. Financial aid filing also runs in this period.
- Spring 2027. Decisions arrive across these months, campus by campus. Any change to your spring coursework goes to the campus in writing.
- Late spring 2027. Accept one offer by the campus deadline, then send final transcripts. Admission remains provisional until they clear.
- Summer 2027. Orientation, course registration and, for international students, the document and status steps.
The pattern worth noticing: the work that decides the outcome happens in the year before the application, while the months after submission are mostly administrative deadlines that are lost through inattention rather than through lack of ability.
Which Deadlines Are Separate From the Application Itself?
Four, and each is missed for the same reason - people assume the application covered it.
The TAG application. Separate tool, separate window, earlier in the fall. It is the one deadline on this calendar that cannot be recovered later.
The Transfer Academic Update. A January step, required, and the point at which the coursework your admission depends on is verified against what you actually enrolled in.
Financial aid. Its own filing cycle, its own forms, and no relation to the admissions deadline. International students should confirm what applies to them before assuming any of it does.
Campus-level requests. Supplemental applications for some programs, portfolio or audition requirements, transcript requests and residency documentation all arrive on campus timelines after you submit.
Put all four on one calendar with the application deadline. A UC transfer file is rarely lost at the December close; it is lost in January, when a course change goes unreported, or in July, when a final transcript was never requested.
What Happens After You Submit?
Less than students expect, and more than they prepare for.
From December onward your file moves through campus review while your own record keeps changing. Fall grades post, spring courses begin, and sometimes a required class is full or has to be dropped. Campuses do not treat those changes as failures - they treat unreported changes as a problem. The single habit that protects a transfer file is documenting every change and confirming it with the campus in writing.
Provisional admission is the other point that catches people out. An offer in April is conditional on a spring term you have not finished yet. Withdrawing from a required course, or falling below a stated GPA condition, is a decision made after the decision letter, and it can undo the offer.
