Cal-GETC Explained: The New General Education Pattern for California Transfer Students
Cal-GETC is the new general education pattern for California community college students who plan to transfer to the University of California or the California State University. It took effect in fall 2025 and replaces the two older patterns, IGETC and CSU GE Breadth, with one shared list for new students. At Harvest College Prep, the first question we ask a new community college student is which GE pattern applies to them, because it shapes every semester that follows.
Policies like this are still settling in. Treat this as an overview, and confirm the details on the University of California admissions site, the CSU transfer pages, ASSIST.org, and your community college's Cal-GETC sheet.
What Is Cal-GETC and Why Did It Replace IGETC?
Before Cal-GETC, students chose between two general education patterns: IGETC, which works for both UC and CSU, and CSU GE Breadth, which works for the CSU. Students who were not sure where they would end up often had to guess, or take extra courses to cover both.
California law (AB 928) called for a single lower-division general education pattern accepted by both systems. The result is the California General Education Transfer Curriculum, Cal-GETC. The goal is simple: fewer wasted units and one clear path for students applying to UC, CSU, or both.
Who Has to Use Cal-GETC?
Your start term is the key.
- Started at a California community college in fall 2025 or later: you follow Cal-GETC.
- Continuously enrolled since before fall 2025: you may still be able to complete IGETC or CSU GE Breadth, or switch to Cal-GETC if it fits your plan better.
"Continuous enrollment" has a specific meaning, and a break in attendance can change which pattern applies to you. If you took a semester off, transferred between community colleges, or have coursework from another country, confirm your status with a counselor before you register for your next term.
The UC has said it will continue to accept IGETC certifications from eligible students, so a student who is properly on IGETC does not need to panic. The important thing is to know which pattern you are on and follow it fully.
What Courses Does Cal-GETC Require?
Cal-GETC is generally described as 11 courses totaling at least 34 semester units, with each course completed with a C or better. The courses fall into six areas:
- English communication: English composition, critical thinking and composition, and oral communication.
- Mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning: one course.
- Arts and humanities: two courses, usually at least one in the arts and one in the humanities.
- Social and behavioral sciences: two courses, usually from different disciplines.
- Physical and biological sciences: two courses, one physical and one biological, with a lab component.
- Ethnic studies: one course.
Two details students often miss. First, oral communication is now part of the shared pattern, which matters for UC-bound students who did not need it under IGETC. Second, ethnic studies is a required area. Build both into your first-year schedule so they do not become last-minute problems.
Each community college publishes its own list of approved Cal-GETC courses, so use your college's current sheet and ASSIST.org rather than a generic list.
How Does Cal-GETC Fit With Major Preparation?
General education is only half of a transfer plan. The other half is major preparation, the lower-division courses your target major expects you to finish before transfer. For competitive and impacted majors, major preparation usually carries more weight in admission than completing every GE course.
That trade-off is the same under Cal-GETC as it was under IGETC. Our post on IGETC vs major prep explains how to balance the two, and the logic carries over directly. For high-unit majors such as engineering, some campuses advise students to focus on major preparation and complete GE later.
Some courses can count toward both Cal-GETC and major preparation. Finding those overlaps is one of the easiest ways to save a semester.
Does Cal-GETC Change How You Plan Your Transfer?
For most students, Cal-GETC makes planning easier, especially if you are applying to both UC and CSU. A few planning points still apply:
- Map your courses early. Use ASSIST.org to check which of your courses satisfy Cal-GETC and which satisfy major preparation at each target campus.
- Request certification. Your community college certifies Cal-GETC completion. Ask how and when to request it before you transfer.
- Watch the unit count. GE, major prep, and electives together should get you to transfer readiness without piling up extra units. See our post on transferable units and the 60-unit rule.
- Check CSU-specific rules. CSU applicants still need the Golden Four courses. Our guide to CSU transfer requirements explains how they fit.
What Should International and Korean Students Know?
Students with coursework from Korea or another country should not assume it will count toward Cal-GETC. Foreign coursework is evaluated separately, and some areas, such as English composition, almost always need to be taken at a US college. Ask your counselor early which areas your existing credits might satisfy.
How Harvest College Prep Helps You Plan Under Cal-GETC
Harvest College Prep has spent 15 years guiding students into top US universities, with more than 1,000 successful admissions and offices in the US and Seoul serving Korean-American and international families. We help students confirm which GE pattern applies, line up Cal-GETC with major preparation for each target campus, and avoid units that do not move them closer to transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cal-GETC?
Cal-GETC, the California General Education Transfer Curriculum, is a single general education pattern that California community college students can complete to satisfy lower-division general education for both the University of California and the California State University. It took effect in fall 2025.
Do I have to use Cal-GETC instead of IGETC?
It depends on when you started. Students who begin at a California community college in fall 2025 or later use Cal-GETC. Students who have been continuously enrolled since before fall 2025 may still be able to complete IGETC or CSU GE Breadth. Continuous-enrollment rules are specific, so confirm your status with your community college counselor.
How many courses and units does Cal-GETC require?
Cal-GETC is generally described as 11 courses totaling at least 34 semester units across six areas, with each course passed at a C or better. Check your college's current Cal-GETC sheet and ASSIST.org for the approved course list, because each college maintains its own list.
Is Cal-GETC required for UC transfer admission?
Completing Cal-GETC is not always required for admission, but it is a common way to finish general education before transfer. Some majors, especially in engineering and the sciences, put major preparation ahead of full GE completion. Check each campus and major on the official UC admissions site.
Can I get partial Cal-GETC certification?
Partial certification rules exist, but they are limited and differ in detail between systems. Ask your community college counselor how partial certification would apply to your plan and which requirements would remain after transfer.
